more about the private and the public. The mugshot made public is shaming. For the Police Dept it is legitimate, even salutory. For an artist to publish a book of mugshots, what is at stake? It seems to me that the privacy already violated, is re-used. Violation of privacy as a not single-use item, in Odette's terms. Maybe privacy is not such a big deal? Maybe crime is an invasion of privacy in the first place? Arrest is.
Then Jerry's work 11/10 brings other questions of private/public into consideration. It invites us to publicly perform a sliver of private life. To some, this is a delicious invitation, and others recoil.
week 10
maybe your good old poetry workshop would have been the best use of class this semester. Talking to Jen Bervin today about teaching writing in an art school, and she says whatever best lets writing function in / with studio work. A straightforward workshop offers a parallel / minor (parallel for a while) practice. With a more open approach let's hope a sentence started in waad will unfurl in studio and vice versa and backwards forwards and squarepants roundpants and upstairs downstairs, etc.
